In Bloom with The Broomhill Festival

Do you have a garden you would be willing to open for others to enjoy?
One of the events for the Broomhill Festival will involve a variety of gardens being open for for a few hours between 8th and 19th June. You may like to offer refreshments and/or sell plants and perhaps join with others in your road; this has been very successful in previous years. The entry fee and share of any profits will go to the Festival charities.
If you would like your garden to be considered please contact:

December 2003

The Independent produced a glossy feature magazine on Sheffield with everything worthwhile highlighted in it from The Winter Garden (which has had a million visitors in one year) to the Millennium Gallery, The Showroom and the Crucible Theatre. In the category the Best of Sheffield 's Places to Shop, Broomhill was: the area around the university and the hospitals with an interesting mix of galleries, small shops and eating places, including a number of surprisingly well-stocked charity shops, often selling items that departing students are unable to take with them. Most interesting is Glossop Road, with its shoe shops, stylish interiors like Anise, Pavilion for flowers, and a couple of good delicatessens. O.K. it is not quite accurate or up to date - no mention of the new Thyme Cafe in Broomhill - but not bad all the same?

September 2002

Broomhill Festival 2002: This year's Festival certainly lived up to its title - Going for Gold. The programme contained many gems - sell-out concerts, a splendid Gala Dinner (with music), Botanic Gardens events, a local history walk, talks, poetry, open gardens, sport, outdoor entertainment, the Garden Party (held in the most brilliant sunshine), and a fitting Festival Service on the final day. Of course this didn^t just "happen^: it was the outcome of almost a year of planning by the Festival Committee under Adrian Alker's expert leadership. The five charities chosen for the 2002 Festival each receive £2,600 - the practical proceeds of 12 days of enjoyable activities which, as always, reinforce the community that is Broomhill. Anyone interested in joining the Festival Committee - planning starts NOW for 2003 - should ring 2670362 ).

September 2001

Broomhill Festival 2001: In addition to its undoubted success in terms of programme and enjoyment, this year's Festival raised enough money to donate £2,000 to each of this year1s five local charities. A splendid affair from all points of view - the many people involved are due warm appreciation from the whole Broomhill community.

August 2000

Broomhill Festival 2000 This June saw one of the most successful Broomhill Festivals ever - not only in terms of the money it raised for this year's chosen charities (over £8000), but in terms of the community involvernent it generated.

Events, from recitals and concerts in St Mark's (by professional musicians and school-chiildren), to Poems and Pints in the pub, via 5-a-side football, window-dressing competitions, jazz in the shopping precinct, art exhibitions, a picnic in the Botanic Gardens, the Gala Dinner with Roy Bailey, and the Garden Party, were well attended, and clearly much enjoyed. Tributes are due to the many people involved in planning and implementing it all - vivid proof that Broomhill does exist as a vibrant community.

Approximately one hundred paintings by professional and amateur artists will be for sale in the Broomhill Methodist Church on Friday 9 April and Saturday 20 April.

June 1998

Broomhill Festival
This year's festival is bigger and better than ever and you should have had a programme by now. As usual both BANG and the Local History Group will have stalls at the Garden Party on Saturday 13 June and we would be delighted to receive offers to help man the stalls.

May 1997

Broomhill Festival 14-22 June
This year's Festival follows a similar format to the last one. As well as the five-a-side football tournament on Sunday 15 June and Tug of War on the 19th, it has Poetry & Pints, a Race Night, a Quiz and a Jazz Night in the various pubs. There will also be the Schools Concert on Tuesday 17th, a concert by the Sterndale Singers on the 14th and a concert which will include Robin Ireland, Alan Brown, Roger Bullivant and a festival choir on Friday 20th, all in St. Mark's. There will be music and dancing outside Summerfield on both Saturdays. The Festival Programme will give full details nearer the time.
BANG as usual will have a stall on the Church Green at the Garden Party and the Local History Group will have a display in the Church. We do need volunteers to help man both of these.

February 1997

Spring Clean Week 18 -27 April and Environmental Weeks 10 - 26 May
If any member wishes to organise a clean-up in their street/area, then black sacks and disposable gloves are being provided by the Cleansing Services Department. ( Please contact the Secretary if you require any.) Leaflets are also available. Other than the dates there has, as yet, been no information about the programme for the Environment Weeks.

May 1995

St. Mark's Fair
St. Mark's Fair is on Saturday 24 June. As last year BANG will have a stall on the green, not selling anything but publicising our activities. There will also be a local history display in the church. We do need volunteers to man the stands.

February 1995

Spring Clean Week, 3-7 April
A leaflet has just been received from the Cleansing Services Department about this event but no decision has yet been taken by the Committee about participating at an "official" level. We would however urge all members to ensure that the pavement outside their houses is kept clean. We know that this is supposed to be the Council's job but since they are unable to do so we can all do our bit to make the Broomhill streets more pleasant to walk along. Many of you already do this on a regular basis in addition to picking up all the litter that ends up in our gardens. Who knows, a concerted effort during Spring Clean Week may make some of our neighbours join in.
Black sacks and disposable gloves are, according to the leaflet available to groups, so if you are contemplating a clean up please contact the Secretary so that a bulk order can be sent to the Cleansing Department.

May 1994

Summer Fairs
St. Mark's Fair is on Saturday 25 June. As last year BANG will have a stall on the green, not selling anything but publicising our activities. There will also be a local history display in the church around the theme of the family, this year's festival theme. We do need volunteers to man the stands.
Broomhill School is having its fair on Saturday 16 July. Please support this since the school now more than ever is an essential part of the community. If you have not visited the Environmental Garden next to the school then this is an ideal opportunity to do so.

November 1993

Local History Fair
The fair, held on Saturday, 30 October, in the old town hall, was very well attended. Our stall was well patronised and even merited a brief mention in Monday's Star. We sold £22 worth of publications and cards, somewhat to our surprise. The range and number of local history and similar societies exhibiting was very impressive.

May 1993

St. Mark's Fair, 26 June
BANG will have a Local History display in the church which will be based on the centenary theme. BANG may also have a stall selling produce such as plants and cakes, as well as providing information about the activities and aims of BANG, provided that we get support from members in manning the stand and in providing material to sell. Please contact the Hon. Secretary of BANG.

August 1992

St. Mark's Summer Fair
Much interest was shown in the Local History display and valuable information exchanged. The BANG stall made some £60, of which £20 was given to MENCAP. We were, however, disappointed at the lack of offers to help man the two stalls or to provide material for sale. Only former committee members helped!

May 1992

St. Mark's Summer Festival - 18 to 21 June
BANG will have a Local History display in the church on both Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June and there will also be a BANG stall on the Saturday selling plants, cakes and other produce, as well as providing information about the activities and aims of BANG.
This is your chance o discuss problems, preferably ones other than litter and parking, and to put forward your views on what you would like the Committee to do. It is also an opportunity to find out more about the history of the district, of your house and of some of the former residents.
There will be lots happening in and around the church during the Summer Festival, so make a note of these dates now and look out for further information. Offer of help in manning the stalls and of plants and/or cakes, etc., will be very welcome - please contact the Hon. Secretary of BANG.

Environment Week, 16-24 May
BANG is planning to have a go at clearing the litter in Victoria Gardens and around the car park next to the Nottingham House on Saturday, 24 May at 10.00 a.m. Anyone able to help please come equipped with gloves and a litter-pick, if you have one.

The University's Botanical Gardens and greenhouses will be open to the public on Wednesday, 20 May from 10.00 a.m.-4.30 p.m. and there will be a sale of surplus plants. The entrance to the Gardens is 26 Taptonville Road. A programme listing the many activities happening during the week is available at the library.

May 1991

BANG and Local History Group Fair, Scout Hut, Spooner Road, Saturday 15 June, 2.30 p.m-5.00 p.m.
To give members and other Broomhill residents a chance to find out more about the activities of both BANG and the Local History Group and also to raise funds, we are having a combined Fair and Open Meeting at the Scout Hut on 15 June.
This is your chance to discuss problems, preferably ones other than litter and parking and to put forward your views on what you would like the Committee to do. It is also an opportunity to find out more about the history of the district, of your house and of some of the former residents.
We shall be serving teas and there will be a plant and a produce stall. This being a neighbourhood group, we would be grateful for offers of help with serving teas and with supplying goodies for the stalls. We are hoping to have a craft stall as well, but this depends on contributions from you.

Environment Week, 11-19 May
BANG is not planning any official activity, but we are hoping that all members will use this as an opportunity to spring clean their patch and to encourage neighbours to do the same...The area will be one in which many visitors and officials of the Student Games will be staying and we should try to live up to Betjamin's description of Broomhill being the prettiest suburb in England.

May 1990

St. Mark's Garden Party - Saturday, 23 June, 2.00-4.00 p.m.
There is no Broomhill Festival as such this year, the activities being confined to Opera for Children - A Pride of Lions and the Happy Prince, on Thursday 21 June and Friday, 22 June at 5.30 p.m. and Sunday, 24 June at 3.00 p.m., all at St. Mark's Church; and the Garden Party on the Green on the Saturday.
BANG will have a stall at which we will sell plants, biscuits and small cakes and preserves, as well as art and craft work similar to that sold at the Victorian Tea Party in December. Any contributions will be welcome, as will help in manning the stall.

February 1990

Environment Week, 28 April-7 May
In an attempt to improve the look of Broomhill, we would like to encourage all our members to get together with their neighbours to at least spring clean their front gardens and sweep the pavement in front of their houses.
