Schools - Planning applications and other information April 2005 Mushroom Lane Nursery Mushroom Lane Nursery (on Mushroom Lane off Western Bank) has been Broomhill's nursery for 30 years. Last year it was threatened with closure, but after a long campaign from parents and local supporters, the City Council has agreed to maintain the Nursery for at least another year. This is very good news and was celebrated at the Nursery's 30th Anniversary party last week. However, because of the threatened closure many parents have booked child care places in other nurseries and this means that Mushroom Lane Nursery is now short of the number of chidren it needs to remain viable. The Council has agreed to fund an advertising campaign to remind people in Broomhill, and other areas, that the Nursery will stay open if there is enough demand for places. If you would like more information about Mushroom Lane Nursery please telephone 0114 2721453.
Broomhill contains a number of privately funded schools. Many of these have expanded considerably in the last decade. 2002 The Sheffield Telegraph reported on 2 August 2002 on a planning application for Change of Use Decision by the The Girls Day School Trust for the use of offices at 4 Melbourne Avenue for educational purposes including a children's nursery. At the planning board meeting the vote went 4-3 in favour of the Sheffield Girls High School's wish to expand into this Victorian property despite strong opposition from local residents already deeply concerned about parking problems in the area. The verdict means that the school can use the building currently occupied by architects HLM for a day nursery for up to 20 children acting as a feeder for the main school and for teaching accommodation for the junior department. The application prompted 22 letters of objection and a protest from BANG.
2001 Open House, Westbourne Senior School: On 11 October, BANG members enjoyed the hospitality of staff and pupils at Westbourne's new senior school at Ashdell House. The buildings have been impressively restored and converted in a triumph of functional yet conservation-aware development. A particular highlight was the French teaching room styled after a bar. Westbourne Senior School, formerly Ashdell House. In less than a year, Ashdell House, formerly used as an extension to Stephenson Hall of Residence, has been completely transformed and by 4 September will be in use as the Senior School of Westbourne School, catering for a maximum of 90 pupils. Both internally and externally the building and grounds have been completely 'rediscovered' and opened up, revealing what was a hidden jewel in the Broomhill area. Inside the main building the formerly un-used basement has been developed to provide cloakrooms, toilets and common rooms. The ground floor now provides teaching accommodation, as does the first floor. By judicious removal of some internal walls spacious and well lit rooms have been provided. The separate Coach House provides, on the ground floor, a small Assembly room (useful, perhaps, for BANG AGMs!) and upstairs a large and attractive room has been created, now showing the original beams. Around the two buildings the whole area has been transformed, with a vehicular entrance from Ashdell Road and pedestrian access both from Ashdell Road and the 'link' road, which has been narrowed and fitted with 'speed bumps'. On Thursday 11 October the Headmaster, Colin Wilmshurst, will be holding Open House between 7 and 8 pm for local residents wishing to see the new Senior School. A warm welcome with wine awaits you!
2000 High School The Girls Day School Trust has applied for removal of restrictions on the use of the High School's new sports hall preventing non-school use of the hall. To secure permission for its construction in 1997, the Trust undertook that no such use would be made. However, within months of its completion, Champs began operating holiday and weekend camps for children, using the new hall and featuring this in its publicity. Council officers moved to enforce the restrictions, leading to the Trust's application to have these removed. 20 letters of objection and a petition with signatures from 28 of the 33 households on Rutland Park secured a clear recommendation from Council officers to refuse the application. Traffic and parking pressures having further increased since 1997, officers determined that there were no grounds for lifting the restrictions. At the City Centre and West planning board meeting on 5th June, the Chair sought a compromise solution by asking the Trust to undertake to pay the cost of a residents' parking scheme for Rutland Park, meanwhile deferring a decision to a further meeting of the board on 26th June.
Dec. 1998
Westbourne School is seeking planning permission for a new building on its Ashdell Road site at 50-54 Westbourne Road, Ashdell and Ashdell Road. The planning application reference is 98/111/2P and the plans can be inspected at the Planning, Transportation & Enquiry Desk, 2nd Floor, Town Hall Extension. This application follows an unsuccessful application to convert part of the house at 31 Ashdell Road to educational use.
Dec. 1997
Melbourne Avenue has been bought by the High School for use by the 6th form. The new dining hall is due to come into use next term and the old dining hall will then be demolished.
Sept. 1997
The erection of a dining hall with ancillary facilities and parking for the Girls High School at the Southbourne Road end of Melbourne Avenue has been granted and work on this is in progress. The old dining hall will be demolished and permission has been granted for the erection of a sports hall on this site, which is behind the main school building. The applications for No. 4 Endcliffe Crescent, the former Johnson Memorial Home, which has been acquired by Birkdale School and is being restored by them, have been withdrawn.
May 1994
The most significant event of the past year has been the saving of Broomhill School. If it had closed then Broomhill would have had very little future as a family suburb.

Proposed closure of
Broomhill Infant School The alternative schools - Lydgate Lane, Nether Green and Westways all entail a bus journey and a walk, or else yet more cars. BANG are liaising with the school and we will be writing to the Education Department and Councillors, etc. to voice our objection to the closure. We are hoping to have petitions for you to sign at the library, Post Office, and in St. Mark's, but have not as yet been able to finalise this. There will be an open meeting at Broomhill School on 8 March at 7.00 p.m. at which someone from the Education Department will be present. |
